Luke 24
See Appendix I, and these texts and notes: Mt.28; Mark 16; John 20-21; Acts 1:1-11; I Cor.15:3-8.
24:11. Thomas was typical, as it seems all needed to see to believe. This is to our benefit, as it greatly enhances their credibility as witnesses (cf.24-25).
24:16. Cf. Mark 16:12; John 20:14; 21:4,12.
24:18. It was all well known. Cf. Acts 26:26.
24:18, 25. The New Bible Commentary: Revised has this to say about these two verses. V.18, “Cleopas may be the Clopas of John 19:25.” V.25, “Men is too strong a translation. Greek idiom would use the masculine form to address a mixed company (cf.17:34), and it is likely that the unnamed disciple was Cleopas’s wife.” I.H. Marshall. (NIV avoids this problem, as does ESV and others.)
24:21. Without the resurrection, their hopes were crushed. Cf. I Cor.15:17-19.
24:27. The OT speaks of Christ, and he is the key to understanding all of it (cf.32).
24:28, “He acted as though He would go farther.” Cf. Mark 6:48; Ex.33:19; 34:6.
24:29-31.
Abide with Me, ‘Tis Eventide. Words by M. Lowrie Hofford.
Abide with me, ’tis eventide!
The day is past and gone;
The shadows of the evening fall’
The night is coming on!
Within my heart a welcome Guest,
Within my home abide.
Refrain
O Savior, stay this night with me;
Behold, ’tis eventide!
O Savior, stay this night with me;
Behold, ’tis eventide!
Abide with me, ’tis eventide!
Thy walk today with me
Has made my heart within me burn,
As I communed with Thee.
Thy earnest words have filled my soul
And kept me near thy side.
Refrain
Abide with me, ’tis eventide!
And lone will be the night
If I cannot commune with Thee,
Nor find in Thee my light.
The darkness of the world, I fear,
Would in my home abide.
Refrain
Cf. I Cor. 11:24, “Do this in remembrance of Me.” We see Christ in the Supper: 1. The word is opened (27); 2. The sacrament administered (30); 3. Christ is shown forth (31, 35); 4. Confession is made that Jesus is our life, and the hope of our hearts (32).
24:33-35. It is those gathered in the house who are saying this (34). It is probably the women speaking, whose story had been doubted (11), but who are now vindicated, first by Simon, and now again by these two arriving disciples. (Some still did not believe, Mark 16:12-13).
24:36-43. He proved to them that he was still flesh and bones, yet he was not limited by this. They did not see him walk through the locked door or the walls (despite the usual gloss), but they just suddenly became aware that he was in their midst (cf.31, and Mt.18:20).
24:44-53. These verses summarize what he said and did among them for the 40 days until his ascension, including early on his appearance to the 500 who were gathered in Galilee (I Cor.15:6). These were the witnesses to the fulfillment of the hope of the ages, as told in the OT Scriptures (45-46). The Holy Spirit would speak through the mouths of the apostles his revelation concerning Christ. They were witnesses (48) of God’s work of redemption and the resurrection. The inspiration of the Holy Spirit enabled them to preach and to record for us their NT testimony (49).
